Tár (2022)

Director: Todd Field
Writer: Todd Field
Starring: Cate Blanchett

The Intro:
“Tár” came crashing into my radar once a lot of the podcasts I listen to started singing about it. Honestly, slap Cate Blanchett’s name on anything and I’m just about down. Despite being called a sure-fire force for awards season, I knew next to nothing about “Tár.” But as you all may have come to know, the more I don’t know about a movie, the more excited and possibly positive I am going to be.

IMDb Summary:
“Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and first-ever female music director of a major German orchestra.”

The Oberrating:
I’m scared the film world might assault me for this one, but “Tár” did not work for me. Clocking in at 2 hours and 38 minutes, it had me locked in for a solid hour but then it really starts to drag. I’m not sure if I wasn’t in the right mind for this or if I had the right patience, but again, it just didn’t work for me. I found it boring and partially aimless at times. Scattered amongst the long runtime are brief moments where it actually was quite funny and also has moments of tension. Also, within that first hour that I mentioned, it had some of the better moments of the movie that had me interested in who Lydia Tár was in the peak of her career leading into her descent into irrelevance. Unfortunately, these bright spots are few and far between for me to give “Tár” a full backing for awards season and as the incredible feat of cinema that many are labeling it.

If there is anything that I am absolutely on board with, her name is Cate Blanchett. Cate absolutely runs this show. Regardless of its pace, content, or aimlessness, Cate eats up every moment with absolutely flawless execution. It was her alone that kept me watching for what felt like a forever-long movie because she was magnificent.

The Wrap-Up:
I mean, it is what it is at this point. This is one of the few occasions where an award show front-runner just does not work for me. However, as far as those within that category go, this is surely one of the better ones due to Blanchett’s efforts. I stamp a 3 out of 5 for this one simply because of Cate. If this were ANYONE else, they would not have been as magnetic as she was and this rating would’ve plummeted. As for parting words, I have a few: APARTMENT FOR SALE!!! APARTMENT FOR SALEEEEE!!!!

Rating: 3/5
