If there was ever an era of movies that I know almost nothing about, it would be the 90’s and early 2000’s. I was born in ’92, and besides cartoon movies and whatever random action flick my dad was having me watch, I practically saw nothing of worth from this timeframe. So here we are with a film that I had never even heard of besides it rolling through my requests by my buddy Steve.
“A lovelorn screenwriter becomes desperate as he tries and fails to adapt “The Orchid Thief” by Susan Orlean for the screen.”
I think this one missed me a little. I did not hate the movie, but in no way did it really sink its teeth into me and get me to really be invested in it. It bored me on multiple occasions (to the point I actually nodded off one time,) and I just could not get sunken into the story as a whole. I think the deeper mumbo jumbo of a Charlie Kaufman project just missed me, and I was left with a slow rolling dramedy that made me giggle at a few parts.
If there was anything that held me in check and still made me keep the rating up, it was the performances. Nic Cage puts on a commendable performance from start to finish. I have always been a big fan of his. Especially nowadays with his ridiculous movies. However, Cage has been in the game for a long time, and his older projects are nothing to overlook.
Chris Cooper is the star of the show. His role as Laroche is exceptional. While being a character with a tragic back story, he is the star that brings much of the “slap your knee” comedy to the screen.
Meryl Streep…. Yeah, still not impressed. Sorry not sorry.
I am glad to have another Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman film under my belt. Sure I was not wild about it, but it was definitely still worth my time, and surely worth anyone else’s time that might have an interest in the movie and/or the stars involved!
