Notch another movie off the list of ones that were supposed to be out ages ago and are only just now being released. “Free Guy” has been a much anticipated film of mine for a good while now. I love me some Ryan Reynolds, and the comedy films that come from him. Call me a simple creature, IDGAF. Let’s dig in!
“A bank teller discovers that he’s actually an NPC inside a brutal, open world video game.”
So what happens when you combine “The Emoji Movie,” “Ready Player One,” and “Deadpool” together, then cast Buddy the elf as your star character? Well, you get “Free Guy,” but make it actually enjoyable. (Looking at you, Emoji Movie…) But really though, the themes of “Free Guy” match a great many other films that have come before it, but screw it! This is still good entertaining fun! The quick-witted charm of Ryan Reynolds never ceases to make me crack up at any joke he makes, no matter if it’s PG-13 or hard R. Between the massive amounts of video game references made in “Free Guy” as well as the nods and appearances of many other mega popular films, there is simply a lot to enjoy in this movie.
I have endless amounts of stuff I want to say about all the actors in “Free Guy,” but I will try to keep it quick and effective.
Ryan, per usual, is his hilarious sarcastic asshole self. I can’t help but to love the guy and everything he says and does. The man is hilarious, and always has been. This is practically PG-13 Deadpool with less blatant sexual references and more hidden innuendo jokes. If you love Ryan and all his work, then this will be added right into your arsenal of Reynolds favorites.
Co-star Jodie Comer brought the heat as well. I love when a co-star is literally a co-star and not outshined by a bigger name. Jodie split screen time well, in my opinion, with Ryan. Her character hardly felt any less important than Guy. And she was equally as funny and badass as Guy. Bravo!
Joe Keery impressed the hell out of me as tech nerd “Keys.” His acting was pretty on point. I see improvements in his presence from his role in “Stranger Things.” Yet another performance that had plenty of funny and memorable moments while also taking hold of the spotlight when it was focused on him.
LET’S GO TAIKAAAAAAAA! What is there to even say about the comedic genius and personality that is Taika Waititi?! This man is a superstar! I am pretty sure I was smiling ear to ear and/or laughing with every moment that passed with Taika involved.
The cameos of “Free Guy” is yet another thing that could draw butts to seats alone. This movie is chockfull of guest stars that appear for anywhere from a brief moment to a solid 5 minute scene. Without spoilers, some of these appearances are laugh out loud funny, or simply just an entertaining bit to witness.
“Free Guy” has largely been welcome to viewers as one of the most entertaining films of the year. I concur, as it is plenty of fun and filled with a ton of laughs. The cast, as a whole, packs a huge punch for viewers to love and enjoy. Sure, the movie is reskinned or, at least, a different version of plenty of other movies, but regardless, it is one that was meant to entertain.
