2020 Oberrated Oscar Predictions

oberrated oscars 2020

5 times… 5 times I have done this dance and I have no intentions of quitting. It is now time to roll out my Oberrated Oscar Predictions!

First of all, thanks to any return readers as well as new readers of my predictions and overall my blog. I appreciate ya’ll!

As expected, we have a very impressive line up for the coveted Best Picture award. Compared to some years where not all nominees are as strong, at least from my point of view, this year is another strong one (nearly) across the board.

Now as always, I will be breaking down each category in different ways. What I believe the Academy will pick, what I personal would love to be picked, and what I think would be an underdog to win it. I will have a quick breakdown summary under each to break down my thoughts and as every year it will be spoiler heavy since this is a straight up prediction post.
Best Picture Nominees:

Ford v Ferrari

Parasite

Little Women

Irishman

Marriage Story

Jojo Rabbit

1917

Joker

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Personal Pick: Parasite or 1917
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood

This year is an incredible year for the Best Pictures, in my opinion. My top three favorites in no particular order (or maybe a little bit with “Parasite” in lead) is “Parasite,” “1917,” and “Joker.” These three truly blew me away after watching and are my top three to win. However, that does not discredit most of the other contenders. I have glowing commendations about every film besides maybe “The Irishman” which received my lowest rating and I just did not have much of an interest in.

As for my true prediction of how the Academy will go, I think “1917” has this in the bag with some favor also going toward “Parasite.”
Actor in a Leading Role: Antonio Banderas – Leonardo DiCaprio – Adam Driver – Joaquin Phoenix – Jonathan Pryce

Personal Pick: Joaquin Phoenix
Academy Pick: Joaquin Phoenix
Underdog Steal: Leonardo DiCaprio

I love Phoenix in “Joker” just as much as the awards circuits have. I feel like he will continue to win as he has so far. Unfortunately I did not see Banderas’ performance in “Pain and Glory” which I have heard was quite good, but I think it is a lock for Phoenix to win.
Actress in a Leading Role: Cynthia Erivo – Scarlett Johansson – Saoirse Ronan – Charlize Theron – Renée Zellweger

Personal Pick: Saoirse Ronan
Academy Pick: Renée Zellweger
Underdog Steal: Cynthia Erivo

My heart will always be with Ronan. I did not see “Harriet,” “Bombshell,” or “Judy,” but from what I watched, I favor Ronan. I 100% believe Zellweger wins as she has cleaned up most award shows and to be honest, this set of performances are not the strongest as they have been in recent years. So if Zellweger is as good as people and the award shows have said, she wins, no doubt.
Actor in a Supporting Role: Tom Hanks – Anthony Hopkins – Al Pacino – Joe Pesci – Brad Pitt

Personal Pick: Brad Pitt
Academy Pick: Brad Pitt
Underdog Steal: Tom Hanks

Brad…fuckin…Pitt. No contest. Pesci and Pacino have no reason winning this. I feel as if they are just rehashed performances of old time. Hopkins and his film “The Two Popes” did not cause too many waves. The only true contender is Tom Hanks, whom of which I would not be opposed to winning.
Actress in a Supporting Role: Kathy Bates – Laura Dern – Scarlett Johansson – Florence Pugh – Margot Robbie

Personal Pick: Florence Pugh
Academy Pick: Laura Dern
Underdog Steal: Scarlett Johansson

For me, Florence Pugh is a no contest in my heart. She was immaculate in “Little Women.” And to be even more honest, Dern was excellent in “Marriage Story” but not that good. I feel she was better in “Little Women.” But the Academy will go with the flow and pick Dern. Although, a shock to the viewers could happen where Pugh or even Johansson wins because Johansson actually was powerful in “Jojo Rabbit.” One of my shining moments of that film.
Animated Feature Film: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – I Lost My Body – Klaus – Missing Link – Toy Story 4

Personal Pick: Missing Link
Academy Pick: Missing Link
Underdog Steal: I Lost My Body

HAHAHAHAHA, SUCKS TO SUCK, “FROZEN!” Sorry, that was unprofessional… Whatever… I think “Missing Link” will shock the world with a win. The runner up even will not be Toy Story or Dragon, it will be “I Lost My Body.” Never been impressed with the Dragon movies and “Toy Story 4” was not that good.
Cinematography: The Irishman – Joker – The Lighthouse – 1917 – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood

Personal Pick: 1917
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: The Lighthouse

This is Deakins’ award to lose. “1917” is just that immaculate. If “1917” were not here, I would be all systems go on “The Lighthouse.” Although Hollywood and Joker are not films to overlook.
Costume Design: The Irishman – Jojo Rabbit – Joker – Little Women – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood

Personal Pick: Little Women
Academy Pick: Little Women
Underdog Steal: Once upon a Time … in Hollywood

This was a hard one to predict for the Academy. I am split between “Little Women” and “Jojo Rabbit.” I feel like I might be kicking myself later but I decided on “Little Women”.
Directing: The Irishman – Joker – 1917 – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood – Parasite

Personal Pick: Bong Joon Ho for Parasite
Academy Pick: Sam Mendes for 1917
Underdog Steal: Tarantino for Hollywood

I say Mendes for 1917 is a wrap for this award for one reason only. The Academy consists of old Hollywood voters who can not see past one inch subtitles (thank you for your speech, Bong) and will not vote for Parasite despite it deserving this award. Bong, you are my guy.
Documentary (Feature): American Factory – The Cave – The Edge of Democracy – For Sama – Honeyland

Academy Pick: Honeyland

Here comes the shot in the dark predictions. I am split between Honeyland or American Factory.
Documentary (Short Subject): In the Absence – Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone – Life Overtakes Me – St. Louis Superman – Walk Run Cha-Cha

Academy Pick: Life Overtakes Me

No knowledge of nominees.
Film Editing: Ford v Ferrari – The Irishman – Jojo Rabbit – Joker – Parasite

Personal Pick: Ford v Ferrari
Academy Pick: Ford v Ferrari
Underdog Steal: Parasite

I am pretty confident here. No contest, “Ford v Ferrari.”
International Feature Film: Corpus Christi – Honeyland – Les Misérables – Pain and Glory – Parasite

Personal Pick: Parasite
Academy Pick: Parasite
Underdog Steal: Pain and Glory

This happened last year with “Roma.” When an international film is nominated for Best Picture and also stands alone in the International film category, it is a no contest. “Parasite” wins with zero opposition.
Makeup and Hairstyling: Bombshell – Joker – Judy – Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – 1917

AKA the Suicide Sqaud award.

Personal Pick: Joker
Academy Pick: Joker
Underdog Steal: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

I think Joker mayyy have this in the bag. However my gut is also saying “Judy.” Who knows?
Music (Original Score): Joker – Little Women – Marriage Story – 1917 – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Personal Pick: 1917
Academy Pick: Joker
Underdog Steal: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Of all these films, “1917” was my favorite of the nominees. However, I think the trend will continue and Hildur with “Joker” will win again. I am not exactly opposed to this, but my favorite was “1917.”
Music (Original Song): “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” Toy Story 4 – “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” Rocketman – “I’m Standing With You” Breakthrough – “Into The Unknown” Frozen II – “Stand Up” Harriet

Personal Pick: Rocketman
Academy Pick: Rocketman
Underdog Steal: Breakthrough

No doubt, “Rocketman” is my pick. I feel the Academy may pick “Rocketman” as well. But in all honesty, I have no clue who can sure fire take it away.
Production Design: The Irishman – Jojo Rabbit – 1917 – Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood – Parasite

Personal Pick: 1917
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: Jojo Rabbit

I feel the Academy will sway between “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917.” I personally am impressed with “1917” due to it having to be a rolling set throughout the entire shot. “Parasite” packs a pretty solid case for a win as well.
Short Film (Animated): Dcera (Daughter) – Hair Love – Kitbull – Memorable – Sister

Personal Pick: Hair Love
Academy Pick: Hair Love
Underdog Pick: Dcera (Daughter)

I do not know too much here. I have seen and like “Hair Love.” I think the Academy will also go along because it has garnered a lot of steam with them.
Short Film (Live Action): Brotherhood – Nefta Football Club – The Neighbors’ Window – Saria – A Sister

Academy Pick: Saria

No knowledge on the nominations
Sound Editing: Ford v Ferrari – Joker – 1917 – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Personal Pick: Ford v Ferrari
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

No major reasons between these. I personally like “Ford v Ferrari”. I can see “1917” being favored. I also can even see Star Wars taking it.
Sound Mixing: Ad Astra – Ford v Ferrari – Joker – 1917 – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood

Personal Pick: 1917
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: Ad Astra

“1917” takes it. The all around mixing is quite impressive.
Visual Effects: Avengers: Endgame – The Irishman – The Lion King – 1917 – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Personal Pick: Avengers: Endgame
Academy Pick: Avengers: Endgame
Underdog Steal: The Lion King

This was a hard pick between Star Wars and Endgame for the Academy pick. I can see it going either way.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay): The Irishman – Jojo Rabbit – Joker – Little Women – The Two Popes

Personal Pick: Little Women
Academy Pick: Jojo Rabbit
Underdog Steal: Joker

I feel this is split between “Little Women” and “Jojo Rabbit.” With the recent momentum “Jojo Rabbit” has picked up in recent award shows, I feel they took the lead over “Little Women.” I still reserve hope for the Greta Gerwig win with “Little Women.”
Writing (Original Screenplay): Knives Out – Marriage Story – 1917 – Once upon a Time … in Hollywood – Parasite

Personal Pick: Parasite
Academy Pick: 1917
Underdog Steal: Once upon a Time … in Hollywood

I feel bad for “Knives Out.” Any other year without these heavy hitters, I would pick it for the win, but “Parasite” is just way too good. However, I think the Academy will still go for “1917” because they’re scared to pick “1917.”

And that is all she wrote! I will be keeping track of my Academy picks to see how well I do. You can follow along as I live tweet the Oscars on Twitter, @OberratedReview, with the hashtag #OberratedOscars. Thanks for reading and enjoy the show! 🏆🎬
