Here is a wildcard for you… Ilya Naishuller presents his baby in the form of ‘Hardcore Henry’, a film that has much gone either under the radar or one that action freaks have been dying to see. Much different and unlike other films the general public may be used to, ‘Hardcore Henry’ is a first person film shot from the eyes of Henry himself. The film has been slated as a high octane film and an experience unlike none other by reviewers. With pulse pounding scenes and non-stop action, how will this film fare against the actions films we all know and love? or will this be an instant classic like none other?
‘Hardcore Henry’ begins literally through the eyes of Henry. A brief walk-through of what Henry recently was going through is told by his wife Estelle (Haley Bennett) but then they are thrown headlong into bad company as a man named Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) enters the science center that the intro is held in, accompanied by heavily armed soldiers. After quick use of research equipment by Estelle to distract Akan and company, Estelle and Henry make an escape from the dangers and is quickly introduced to constant trouble as Akan sends his company on a manhunt for Henry. As he attempts to escape the grasp of Akan but gets split from his wife, Henry meets a man named Jimmy who seems to know what is going on with Henry and requests that he trusts him as he is his only means for survival at this point of the film. The duo then go on a mission to stop Akan and rescue Henry’s wife while taking on an army like amount of soldiers commanded by Akan himself.
I am not going to sugarcoat this at all. This film was INSANE. From literally beginning to end it was non-stop adrenaline filled action all in a first-person experience witnessed like never before. From the pulse-pounding gunshots and action scenes, to the quick scenes of comedic inserts, to the sheer “WTF” moments brought upon by the shock of what is happening or simply by the wild stunt scenes and/or effects. This film is an EXPERIENCE rather than a viewing. I read reviews of people saying that they would lose themselves into feeling like they were in the film themselves but I can fully vouch for this as I felt the same thing. I had many times where I was squinting and shaking my head because I was so focused in on the scenes forgetting that it was a film on its own. ‘Hardcore Henry’ is a film that is going to be remembered either due to pure enjoyment and entertainment or as a cult-classic. It is like none-other and is a wild ride. Not for the feint of heart or the motion sickness prone but if you are not either one of those and love action movies, gore, and oddball comedic moments: This is your movie. This is the start of something great for Ilya, I feel.
